The Imperial Glass Company was founded by Edward Muhleman in Bellaire, Ohio in 1901. Over the next few years a factory was built on 29th Street, with production officially beginning in 1904. Their pressed glass patterns proved very popular and by the 1940s they had absorbed much of the surrounding neighborhood, considered one of the largest glass factories under one roof in the world. They opened offices on Belmont Street and overexpanded in the 1950s, eventually leading to economic difficulties in the 60s that finally led to bankruptcy in the early 70s. Imperial was acquired by Lenox and turned to general manufacturing, but low demand eventually led to its closure in 1984. The factory was razed in 1995 to make room for commercial development, and the Belmont Street location was transformed into a museum in 2002 known as the National Imperial Glass Museum, housing hundreds of works from the company’s history.
