The Faïencerie de Gien is a world-renowned French earthenware manufacturer established in 1821 by Englishman Thomas Hall in the Loire Valley. Hall introduced English industrial manufacturing techniques to France to produce faïence, a high-quality glazed earthenware that combined industrial efficiency with traditional hand-painted artistry. During the 19th Century the company gained prestige by designing custom armorial tableware for Europe’s aristocratic families and winning top honors at international World’s Fairs. Gien achieved architectural fame in the late 19th Century when it was commissioned to manufacture the iconic white bevelled ceramic tiles for the stations of the Paris Métro. Recognized for signature aesthetics like its rich “Gien Blue” glazes, botanical motifs, and pastoral scenes, the manufacture adapted in the late 20th Century by specializing in luxury table services and collaborating with contemporary designers. As a member of the prestigious Comité Colbert, Gien remains an enduring emblem of French art de vivre, producing handcrafted dinnerware and decorative arts at its historic Loire Valley site.
