The Design Institute of America (DIA) is a renowned furniture manufacturer founded in 1971 by Robert Cameron Winzeler, Jr. after branching off from his family’s business Winzeler Stamping in Montpelier, Ohio. Celebrated for its contemporary, Hollywood Regency, and Mid Century Modern designs, the brand is widely recognized for producing sleek, high-quality furniture primarily crafted from polished metal, brass, and glass. DIA became particularly famous for collaborating with iconic mid-century designers like Milo Baughman and Richard Berry to create highly sought-after pieces such as cantilever chairs, expanding dining tables, and their hidden-leaf mechanisms and sophisticated metallic bases of their iconic revolving coffee tables. After closing its doors in 2005 due to rising domestic steel costs, the brand was acquired and changed hands in numerous takeovers, with current corporate operations based in High Point, North Carolina, and many of their early designs are highly sought by collectors of vintage and luxury Americana around the world.
