Barolac glass was first produced in 1930s Czechoslovakia at the Inwald Glassworks in Prague, primarily for export to England. Douglas Jenkins, working with designer Rudolf Schrotter, contributed most of the original designs, which were cast in iron molds by local smiths. Barolac glass is often opalescent or frosted, featuring detailed scenes of nature, pastoral life, and battles, and some pieces were imported to the United States by the Weil Company with added labels. As society began to collapse throughout Europe leading up to World War II, Jenkins hid the molds beneath the factory before fleeing Czechoslovakia in 1939, and many were rediscovered in the 1950s and 60s and are still in use, though wear has blurred some designs. The crisper the image, the older and more collectible the piece.
