Uranium glass, also known as Vaseline glass, is a type of glass that contains a small percentage of uranium, typically 0.1% to 2%, giving it a distinctive yellow-green color and the unique property of glowing bright green under ultraviolet (UV) light. First produced in the early 19th century, its popularity peaked during the Victorian era but declined post-1940s due to health concerns and regulatory measures regarding radioactive materials. Despite its low-level radiation, uranium glass is generally considered safe for handling. Collectors prize items like tableware, vases, and jewelry for their unique appearance and luminescence, and though rare, some contemporary artists still create uranium glass pieces.
