Christian Dior SE, commonly known as Dior (stylized DIOR), is a French multinational luxury fashion house controlled and chaired by French businessman Bernard Arnault, who also heads LVMH. The company was founded in 1946 by French fashion designer Christian Dior. Haute Couture is under the Christian Dior Couture division. Delphine Arnault has been the CEO of Christian Dior Couture since 2023. The looks and styles that Dior created in the early 1950s helped return Paris to its position as the fashion capital of the world after the destruction of World War II. Expansion from France began by the end of 1949 with the opening of a Christian Dior boutique in New York City. By the end of the year, Dior fashions made up 75% of Paris’ fashion exports and 5% of France’s total export revenue. Christian Dior appeared on the cover of TIME magazine in March 1957, but died in October of that year. As Dior had micromanaged nearly every aspect of the company himself, this left the business in chaos, and General Manager Jacques Rouët promoted 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent to Artistic Director to help restructure and organize the company. His designs became more daring, culminating in the 1960 Beat Look inspired by the existentialists in the Saint-Germain des Près cafés and jazz clubs. When Saint Laurent was called up to join the French Army in 1960, he was replaced at Dior by designer Marc Bohan. Bohan instilled his conservative style on the collections, remaining with the company for thirty years. In 1978 their primary shareholder Boussac Group filed for bankruptcy, and Dior’s assets were purchased by the Willot Group, who then went into bankruptcy themselves in 1981. Bernard Arnault and his investment group purchased Dior and drastically repositioned it as the holding company Christian Dior S.A. In 1988 the company took a 32% equity stake into the share capital of LVMH (the combined powerhouses Moët-Hennessy and Louis Vuitton), creating what would become one of the biggest and most influential luxury goods companies in the world. Italian-born Gianfranco Ferré replaced Bohan as head designer in 1989, with several lead designers starting in the 2000s having much shorter tenures. A series of scandals in the 2010s marred the public image of the company, but smart business decisions and bold new products helped restore their reputation by the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
