Vintage Chinoiserie Tole and Gilt Tea Tin Lamp. Vintage Chinoiserie red tole tea tin with gilt decoration inspired by Chinese art, converted into electric lamp.

The Chinese tradition of repurposing vases as lamps reflects both practicality and an appreciation for aesthetic adaptation, especially during the 19th and early 20th centuries when Chinese porcelain became highly sought after in the West. Export vases—often richly decorated with intricate scenes, floral motifs, or symbolic imagery—were frequently converted into table lamps by collectors and decorators seeking to blend Eastern elegance with Western interior design. This practice involved adding a fitted base, a rod through the center for wiring, and a lampshade, transforming the vases into functional yet ornamental household items. While some see this as a creative form of reuse, others view it as a compromise of historical integrity, particularly when valuable antique pieces are altered. Nonetheless, these lamp-converted vases continue to symbolize the fusion of cultures and enduring appeal of Chinese decorative arts.
