Vintage Chinese Reverse Glass Painted Ancestor Portrait. Chinese reverse glass ancestral painting depicting a high official in full regalia. 

Chinese ancestral paintings are formal portrait scrolls created to honor and preserve the memory of deceased family members, playing a vital role in Confucian traditions of filial piety and ancestor worship. These portraits typically depict the ancestor seated in rich ceremonial robes, painted with solemn realism and frontal symmetry to emphasize dignity, continuity, and reverence. While early examples were reserved for aristocrats, the practice became more widespread during the Ming and Qing dynasties, with families commissioning skilled artists to ensure accurate likenesses and respectful representation.
