The Chinese dragon (lóng) is a powerful and auspicious symbol deeply embedded in Chinese mythology, culture, and art, representing strength, wisdom, and good fortune. Unlike the fearsome, fire-breathing dragons of Western tradition, Chinese dragons are benevolent, serpentine creatures associated with water, rainfall, and the heavens. They are often depicted as long, scaled creatures with the horns of a stag, the claws of an eagle, and the whiskered face of a camel or lion. In imperial China, the dragon was an emblem of the emperor, symbolizing his divine right to rule and his connection to cosmic forces. Dragons frequently appear in Chinese art—from bronze vessels and jade carvings to silk paintings and porcelain—often shown soaring through clouds or coiling around waves. Their presence is believed to ward off evil and bring prosperity, making them a central motif in festivals, architecture, and traditional folklore throughout Chinese history.
