In Chinese art, the elephant (xiang, 象) symbolizes strength, wisdom, and peace, and is often associated with auspicious meanings due to wordplay and its majestic presence. The word xiang is a homophone for xiang (祥), meaning “good fortune” or “auspiciousness,” making the elephant a popular motif in decorative arts, especially in combinations that enhance its symbolic power—such as an elephant carrying a vase (ping, 瓶), which together represent “peace and prosperity” (taiping youxiang). Though elephants are not native to most of China, they have long appeared in Buddhist art and imperial iconography, often depicted as noble, gentle creatures capable of bearing great spiritual and worldly burdens. Their portrayal in sculpture, ceramics, and textiles reinforces themes of serenity, stability, and enlightened power.
