Vintage Cast Brass Sculpture of the Lion of St. Mark. Vintage brass sculpture depicting the winged Lion of Saint Mark, mounted on a rectangular green-and-white veined marble base featuring a blank brass plaque.
Size: 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 5 1/4 in.
The Lion of St. Mark is the traditional symbol of Saint Mark the Evangelist and has long represented the city and former maritime republic of Venice. The winged lion is often shown holding an open book bearing the Latin inscription Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus ("Peace be upon you, Mark, my evangelist"), symbolizing peace, wisdom, and the spread of the Gospel. In times of war, the lion is sometimes depicted with a sword instead of an open book, representing strength and defense. Today, the Lion of St. Mark remains a powerful emblem of Venetian history, culture, and identity, appearing on flags, buildings, monuments, and works of art throughout Venice and beyond.
