Burberry Group (previously known by the name Burberrys’ of London) is a British luxury fashion house founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, a draper’s apprentice who set up his own shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England to focus on producing ready to wear outdoor attire. They rapidly built their reputation on his invention of breathable, water-resistant gabardine fabric in 1879, soon producing the most highly sought after coats, footwear, and leather accessories for both rural and urban use, and gained international fame for outfitting major expeditions under Roald Amundsen, Ernest Shackleton, and George Mallory. They invented the “trench coat” for military use in World War I, which soon became a staple with civilians, and following their acquisition by Great Universal Stores in 1955 the company underwent a significant revitalization to become known for high-end luxury status.
