Andy Warhol (born Andy Warhola in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) was the son of Slovakian immigrants whose early life was shaped by illness and his father’s death; he studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology before moving to New York in 1949, where he became a successful magazine illustrator. In the early 1960s, he rejected Abstract Expressionism to depict mass-produced consumer goods like Campbell’s Soup cans, helping define Pop Art and gaining fame for his silkscreen portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. After surviving a 1968 shooting, Warhol became more reclusive, focused on commissioned work and publishing, and upon his death in 1987, his legacy was secured through the establishment of the Andy Warhol Foundation and Museum.
