Blow molding is a manufacturing process for forming hollow plastic parts using either injection or extrusion, similar to the process of making glass bottles. Enoch Ferngren and William Kopitke produced the first plastic blow molding machine and sold it to Hartford Empire Company in 1938, and in the 1950s and 60s the process became popular with the making of large signs and wall decorations, particularly holiday-oriented. Although this fad died out by the late 70s, the machine became extremely popular throughout the world for the making of plastic containers for the soft drink industry, with over 10 billion pieces a year made by 1999. Today, blossoming nostalgia has led to a resurgence in Halloween, Christmas, and Easter blow molds being manufactured by major corporations across the globe, particularly capitalizing on Americana and Christian iconography.
