Vincent Nesbert (1898-1976) was a Polish American painter, muralist, and educator best known for his portraits, landscapes, figure paintings, and large-scale public murals in Pennsylvania. Born in Telechany, Poland, he immigrated to the United States in 1914 and later studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the National Academy of Design, where he earned the prestigious Joseph Pulitzer Prize for a year of study abroad. Nesbert became closely associated with Pittsburgh’s art community, joining the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1928 and eventually serving as its dean for many years. He exhibited in several Carnegie International exhibitions during the 1920s and 1930s and gained recognition for his monumental mural series Justice, Peace and Industry at the Allegheny County Courthouse. His work combined classical training with a strong regional and humanistic sensibility, leaving a lasting impact on Western Pennsylvania’s artistic heritage.
