Vincent Clare was born on December 13th, 1855 in Birmingham, England, and spent most of his life in the countryside on the farthest outskirts of London. Like his father (George) and brother (Oliver), Vincent became quite well known for his still life and flower paintings. Teaching himself to draw by observing his father’s art from an early age, he adopted a softer palette than his sibling or elder, and learned from his father the importance of a steady income, rather than seeking glory and self-satisfaction. As such, he rarely ever exhibited, instead supplying Northampton-based art dealers with regular paintings. Often his works were signed and inscribed with his address on the reverse, and his only major solo exhibition was of just three large works at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool in 1901. He married Eliza Anne Tanner in 1876, with whom he had five children, and traveled outside England only once, to visit the United States and sell his works on a tour from 1886 to 1890. By the time he died in 1930 he was renowned as the quintessential British flora artist, and his delicate works are still highly sought to this day.
