Victoria Montesinos was born in Mexico in 1944. She is the only daughter of the talking pictures pioneer Fernando A. Rivero and actress Maty Humana. When she was three years old she was sent to live with her grandparents, where her desire to play, sing, and act was strictly curtailed. Her mother traveled a lot and her father was always busy, so her childhood was spent in a cavernous, quiet house in Juarez where she discovered drawing as a way to express herself instead. When she was twelve she began painting with Jose Bardasano, a painter who had fled to Mexico during the Spanish Civil War, studying with him for five years. She spent the next ten years in Argentina and France honing her craft, before returning to Mexico in the 1970s, where she fought archaic social standards and misogynistic ideas to be a full-time female artist. In 1983 Victoria moved to New York to work with one of the largest galleries in the United States, learning how to develop high quality lithographic works. Once her reputation was established in the art scene of the United States she returned to Mexico in the late 1980s, developing a new style of oil paintings and serigraphs on textiles. The 1990s were spent traveling back and forth between the two countries extensively, working with numerous galleries on both coasts. Since the 2000s her primary focus has been on portraiture and floral imagery, while incorporating aspects of cinema and film that she idolized in her youth from watching her father’s movies. Today Circle Fine Gallery and the Fingerhut Galleries of California are exclusive providers of her work, and she is acknowledged around the world for her artistic contributions as both a female and Hispanic painter.
