This is an amazing silk screen by Victor Vasarely, a Hungarian artist who was widely accepted as a leader of the op art movement. He grew up in Budapest, studied to be a doctor, then emigrated to Paris and became a graphic designer and poster artist. Later he developed his style of geometric abstract art, with a minimal number of forms and colors. His work “Zebra”, created in the 1930’s, is considered one of the earliest examples of op art. This silk screen is part of the Vega series, which Vasarely started in 1958. The works for the series used surface distortion techniques and were hugely popular, and the series really got going in 1968 when he introduced color to the works. In fancy language, the images were based on spherical distortions to a polychromatic grid, where the surface appears to have been warped - almost like Einstein’s idea that gravity bends light when light approaches a planetary object. The silk screen here has a 3-D effect when viewed straight on. It is very similar to “Vega in Red”, and some people have called it "Vega in Gold" or "Domb-B Yellow". It’s numbered 135 / 150 in the lower left margin and signed in pencil in the lower right margin, and was marked "1973" on the verso. It is under plexiglass, and the overall size is 32 1/4 x 31 in. wide and the sight size is 24 1/4 x 23 3/4 in. wide.
