Chinese peasant paintings are a form of folk art created primarily by rural, self-taught artists in China, especially from the mid-20th century onward. Emerging prominently during the 1950s and 1960s in villages such as Huxian County (now Huaxian District), these brightly colored works depict everyday rural life—farming, festivals, animals, village markets, and community celebrations—often with simple perspectives, bold outlines, and decorative patterns. Although many artists had little formal training, their paintings drew on traditional crafts, embroidery designs, paper-cuts, and local storytelling traditions. During the Cultural Revolution, peasant paintings were promoted as a form of socialist cultural expression, portraying idealized scenes of agricultural labor and collective life. Today they are recognized both as political-era cultural artifacts and as vibrant examples of Chinese folk creativity, and they are exhibited in museums and cultural centers throughout China and internationally.
