Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865) Japan, (2) Woodblock Prints, The Two True Loyal Retainers. Two woodblock prints by Utagawa Kunisada of two actors portraying characters from the play Kanadehon Chushingura, the story of the 47 Ronin.

Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865) was one of the most prolific and commercially successful Japanese woodblock print artists of the Edo period, known especially for his vibrant and detailed portrayals of kabuki actors, beautiful women (bijin-ga), and scenes from classical literature. A prominent figure within the Utagawa school, Kunisada brought a dynamic, theatrical energy to his prints, capturing the expressive drama and stylized elegance of Edo-period urban culture. While his immense popularity during his lifetime rivaled or even surpassed that of contemporaries like Hokusai and Hiroshige, his reputation was long overshadowed in the West—only recently receiving renewed scholarly attention. Kunisada’s works are celebrated for their bold colors, imaginative compositions, and the way they document the fashions, personalities, and entertainment of his time with flair and immediacy.
