Utagawa Kunimasu (also known as Sadamasu, 1791-1832) was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, best known for his portraits of kabuki actors and bijin (beautiful women). A student of Utagawa Toyokuni I, Kunimasu mastered the dynamic, expressive style of the Utagawa school, producing prints that captured the drama, elegance, and theatricality of contemporary urban life. His works often feature bold compositions, refined linework, and attention to costume and gesture, reflecting both the aesthetic and cultural vibrancy of early 19th-century Edo. Though his career was relatively brief, Kunimasu’s contributions to actor prints (yakusha-e) and bijin-ga remain valued for their technical skill, visual appeal, and historical significance within the ukiyo-e tradition.
