Artist Biography:
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist, celebrated for his masterful landscape prints. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hiroshige initially trained as a fire warden before pursuing art under the tutelage of Utagawa Toyohiro. His works are distinguished by their vibrant use of color, innovative compositions, and keen attention to nature's changing moods and seasons. Among his most famous series are "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" and "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," which capture the beauty and culture of 19th-century Japan. Hiroshige's influence extended beyond Japan, profoundly impacting Western artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet, and his legacy endures as a cornerstone of Japanese art.
