Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the great masters of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock printing, celebrated for his evocative landscapes and atmospheric treatment of weather, light, and season. Born Andō Hiroshige in Edo (present-day Tokyo), he studied under Utagawa Toyohiro and initially produced actor and beauty prints before turning increasingly to landscape. His landmark series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (1833–34) established his reputation, while later series such as One Hundred Famous Views of Edo demonstrated his inventive compositions, dramatic viewpoints, and subtle color harmonies. Hiroshige’s poetic landscapes—often featuring rain, snow, mist, bridges, travelers, and ordinary scenes of daily life—had a profound influence on Western artists, particularly the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, including Vincent van Gogh.
