Cannondale Bicycle Corporation, an American division of Dutch conglomerate Pon Holdings, was founded in 1971 by Joe Montgomery and Murdock MacGregor. Initially producing precast concrete and later cycling accessories, the company is now best known for pioneering mass-produced aluminum bicycle frames and innovations like the CAAD series and Lefty forks. Despite being the smallest of the so-called “Big 4” bicycle brands (including Specialized, Trek, and Giant), their unconventional designs have kept them competitive throughout the years. Headquartered in Wilton, Connecticut, with engineering in Germany and France, Cannondale manufactures frames in Taiwan and assembles bikes in Vietnam, the United States, and the Netherlands. Once publicly traded in 1995 before going to bankruptcy protection in 2003 and changing hands several times thereafter, Pon Holdings acquired it in 2021 as part of their purchase of Dorel Sports.
