This is a thermoplastic union case with two ambrotypes of a couple, probably husband and wife. The ambrotypes are both sixth plates, and both people are in period clothes. The embossed covers feature a fireman descending a ladder and carrying a child in his arms; a fire brigade is pumping water on the right and a fireman is pouring water on the flames at the top of the image, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 118, A Fireman's Duty). The clasp is snug and the corners are square. The case was made by Littlefield Parsons in the 1850’s and measures 3 3/4 x 3 3/8 in. wide, and is a rare piece in very good condition.
