Ulrich Scheel was born in 1961 in Kirchheim unter Teck in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. Training in local schools to become a teacher of music and then in Esslingen to become a sports teacher, it was a one-year internship in 1989 under Albrecht Kiedaisch that ignited Scheel’s love of pottery, and particularly plastic ceramics. Co-developing a craft market in Tubingen from 1995 to 2008 led him to develop his own studio in the blacksmith’s workshop his grandfather had owned in Mordiogassle. He continues to produce works that focus on “form as function” and quirky, asymmetrical shapes, with his most recent line called “Crazy Guys,” inspired by Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are.”
