Ulrica Hydman Vallien (1938-2018) was a prominent Swedish artist and glass designer renowned for her expressive, playful style. Originally trained in ceramics at Stockholm’s University of Arts, Crafts and Design under Stig Lindberg, she later married fellow artist Bertil Wallin, who took her last name. In 1972 she made her debut as a glass artist at the Åfors glassworks, quickly distinguishing herself through bold motifs such as tulips, snakes, and stylized faces painted directly onto glass. She designed immensely popular commercial collections for Kosta Boda including Caramba, Open Minds, and Tulipa, bringing high-volume art glass into homes worldwide. Beyond glasswork, her creative versatility extended to painting, textiles, and even custom livery design for British Airways aircraft tails, with a retrospective presented at her alma mater after her passing in 2018.
