These are two thermoplastic cases with ambrotypes. The first case shows two women in period dresses, and they are probably sisters. The ambrotypes are both sixth plates and hand-tinted. The embossed covers feature a decorated oval and scrollwork, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 233). The case has nicks along the edges and the left ambrotype has a loose-fitting gilt-style frame, but the clasp is snug and the case is attractive overall. The case was made by S Peck in the 1850’s and measures 3 3/4 x 3 5/16 in. wide. The second case has two ambrotypes, probably husband and wife. The woman is wearing a period dress and bonnet. The ambrotypes are both sixth plates and hand-tinted. The embossed covers feature cornucopias, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 191, Wheel of Cornucopias). The clasp is snug and the case has sharp corners. The case was made by Littlefield Parsons in the 1850's and measures 3 3/4 x 3 5/16 in. wide. Scarce.
