This is a patriotic thermoplastic union case with a tintype of two Union soldiers, possibly West Point cadets. The tintype is a ninth plate and has embossed covers that feature an eagle holding a scroll which reads “Constitution and the Laws”, a reminder that the country is one. There are Union shields in the four corners, and the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 113, Constitution and the Laws). The ruby velvet lining is loose, but in very good condition, and the clasp is snug. The case has a light chip on the backside and was made by Littlefield Parsons around the Civil War, and it measures 3 3/4 x 3 5/16 in. wide.
