These two lithographs from the 1800’s feature George Washington. One is titled “Washington’s Reception By The Ladies, On Passing The Bridge At Trenton, N. J. April, 1789, On His Way To New York To Be Inaugurated First President Of The United States. Lith. & Pub. By N. Currier, Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1845 by N. Currier, in the Clerk’s office of the District Court of the Southern District of N.Y. 33 Spruce St. New York.” In this lithograph, Washington is on horseback and doffing his hat at the throng of women who have gathered to honor him, and the flag and banners at the top bear the words “The Defender Of The Mothers Will Be … the Protector Of The Daughters” and “Battle Of Trenton Dec 26th 1776”, and the words “Princeton” and “Monmouth” are on the banner in the eagle’s beak. The second lithograph is titled “Gen. George Washington, The Father Of His Country, Lith. & Pub. By N. Currier, 2 Spruce St. N.Y.” Washington is in a blue and yellow uniform, with white breeches, a red and yellow saddle blanket, undated, but probably from the 1840’s, and the hand-colored lithograph was published by Nathaniel Currier, who later became famous as part of Currier and Ives. The first lithograph measures 14 1/8 x 10 1/4 in. wide, with soiling, water stains on the back, and edgewear at the corners. The second lithograph measures 14 x 10 in. wide, with soiling, a couple of small tears at the edges, small lips at the tips, and a diagonal crease on the left side. The soiling detracts, and still scarce lithographs that feature the first President of this country and a true national hero.
