Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) was a renowned Japanese woodblock print artist known for his evocative landscapes and mastery of light and shadow. Born in Hamamatsu, Koitsu apprenticed under the famous ukiyo-e artist Kobayashi Kiyochika, learning the art of depicting atmospheric effects in prints. His works primarily focus on scenes of Japan, capturing tranquil temples, bustling cityscapes, and serene riversides, often at dawn or dusk. Koitsu was part of the shin-hanga movement, which revitalized traditional woodblock printing in the early 20th Century, blending Western techniques with Japanese aesthetics, and spent his final years from 1931 on working for for Shōzaburō Watanabe and his art publishing establishment which also published the work of artists like Kawase Hasui and Yoshida Hiroshi. His prints remain admired for their emotional depth and technical precision, particularly collected for his remarkable abilities incorporating modern light and shading effects into traditional forms.
