Artist Biography:
Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870–1949) was a renowned Japanese woodblock print artist known for his evocative landscapes and mastery of light and shadow. Born in Hamamatsu, Koitsu apprenticed under the famous ukiyo-e artist Kobayashi Kiyochika, learning the art of depicting atmospheric effects in prints. His works primarily focus on scenes of Japan, capturing tranquil temples, bustling cityscapes, and serene riversides, often at dawn or dusk. Koitsu was part of the shin-hanga movement, which revitalized traditional woodblock printing in the early 20th century, blending Western techniques with Japanese aesthetics. His prints remain admired for their emotional depth and technical precision.
