Tribal Figural Stringed Instrument, Carved Wood. Gourd-shaped, highly personalized, taut strings.

Size: 5 1/2 X 5 1/2 X 12 1/2 in.

#5381 .

Stringed instruments produce sound from vibrating strings when a performer plays or sounds the strings in some manner, either by plucking, striking, or rubbing. In most string instruments the vibrations are transmitted to the body of the instrument, which often incorporates some sort of hollow or enclosed area for better sound projection. The earliest evidence of stringed instruments dates to around 13,000 BC from a cave painting in the Trois Freres in France. Since each string plays a single note, adding strings added new notes, creating bow harps, harps and lyres. In turn, this led to being able to play dyads and chords. Another innovation occurred when the bow harp was straightened out and a bridge used to lift the strings off the stick-neck, creating the lute. Archaeological digs have revealed how these instruments also evolved due to personal preferences and characteristics imparted by their builders and players, such as a 2,000 year old singularly stringed instrument carved ornately out of deer antler. This piece, with four strings and ornamented with a figure carved into the head astride a horse or donkey, suggests it was created by an indigenous tribal member for personal use, likely in Africa, Indonesia, or South America.
