Anthony Glyn “Tony” Evans (1942–2009) was a Welsh-American scientist and ceramic artist whose work bridged scientific innovation and the ancient Japanese tradition of raku. After an eminent career in materials science and engineering, including teaching at major American universities, Evans became increasingly devoted to ceramics after encountering raku pottery. Working from his studio in Northern California, he developed distinctive raku vessels and sculptural forms celebrated for their richly textured surfaces, crackled glazes, and iridescent, often unpredictable colors. His scientific understanding of ceramics informed his experimental approach to firing and glazing, while his fascination with Japanese techniques gave his work a distinctive aesthetic character. Evans produced a substantial body of pottery and sculpture that remains collected and traded internationally.
