After his early retail venture, People’s Place, went bankrupt, he relocated to Manhattan to pursue fashion design full-time, turning down lucrative apprenticeship offers from Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis. With the financial backing of businessman Mohan Murjani, he launched his eponymous label, the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation, in 1985, using a daring billboard campaign in Times Square to proclaim himself one of America’s next great designers alongside Ralph Lauren and the like. The scheme worked, quickly popularizing a signature “classic American cool” aesthetic, modernizing traditional, buttoned-up Ivy League prep styles with relaxed cuts and vibrant red, white, and blue palettes. By successfully bridging the gap between collegiate prep and the emerging 1990s hip-hop street culture, Hilfiger built a multi-billion-dollar global lifestyle empire that remains a cornerstone of American fashion today.
