Tom Savage was born November 28th, 1953 in Tennessee. From an early age he showed an interest in art, and upon moving to California in his twenties he became renowned for his abstract expressionist works, drawing on historical post-War European influences including automatism and surrealism. He struggled frequently with alcoholism while working in numerous galleries on the West Coast, exhibiting for the first time in the late 1970s in Los Angeles. His works polarized critics, who found it to be less angst-ridden and far more restrained than many of his contemporaries, but he remained a well-listed artist even after his death in La Quinta on August 4th, 2018 due to a long battle with cirrhosis of the liver.
