Timothy R. Thies (1954–2010), born in Boone, Iowa, was a celebrated American representational painter known for his luminous landscapes, floral still lifes, portraits, and seascapes. After graduating from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1976, he studied under masters such as Nelson Shanks at the National Academy of Design and Henry Hensche at the Provincetown Arts Center. In 1997, he became the protégé of acclaimed painter Richard Schmid and co-founded the Putney Painters collective, refining his plein-air technique. Thies was especially recognized for his unique gilding method, applying 22k or 23k gold leaf beneath oil paint to create a glowing, sunlit effect. His work received numerous honors, including Best of Show at the Bennington Center for the Arts, and was featured in exhibitions at the Salmagundi Club, California Art Club, and Copley Society. A key figure at West Wind Fine Art, Thies left behind a legacy of warmth and brilliance in his art, which continues to inspire collectors and fellow painters.
