This lot consist of three books that were written around the turn-of the century, between 1923 and 1932. They are "Benny Cleveland's Job", "Cargoes for Crusoes", and "The Prophet".
"Benny Cleveland's Job And Other Verse" was written by Joseph A. Campbell and is a presentation copy that was inscribed by the author to James D. Henderson and signed by Campbell, and it was published by David D. Nickerson in Boston in 1923. The book is 3/4 bound, with blank endpapers, the inscription on the front flyleaf, it has a frontis portrait of Campbell, the title page, the copyright page dated 1923, a thank-you note by Campbell written to his friends for encouraging him to write the book, two pages of Contents, and the text, which runs to 96 pages. Some of the pages are uncut.
The book is 8vo. and measures 8 3/4 x 5 3/4 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages. There are small bumps on the heel of the spine, a small curl-in on one tip, the inscription is quite clear, and the book is in very good condition overall.
The second book is titled "Cargoes for Crusoes", written by Grant Overton and a stated first edition published by D. Appleton, George H. Doran, and Little Brown in 1924.
The book is in blue cloth, with paper labels on the spine and front cover, blank endpapers with a small bookstore label (Chas Lauriat, Boston) on the front flyleaf, the half title, a list of books by Grant Overton on the page opposite the title page, the title page has a vignette of Robinson Crusoe with a treasure chest by his feet, and the copyright page says "first printing September 1924", so the book is clearly a first edition. There's a two-page Preface, two pages of Contents, with 24 chapters about different authors (including the likes of Aldous Huxley, Edith Wharton, Michael Arlen, and Emerson Hough), then a list of portraits (photos) for nine authors, 388 pages of text, followed by an Index of prices for books by different authors (pages 389 to 402) and an Index that runs from 403 to 416, with some uncut pages in the book, and it does not come with a dust jacket.
Grant Martin Overton (1887 - 1930) was an American writer and critic who was born in Patchogue, New York and attended Princeton University. Overton imagined Robinson Crusoe stuck on his desert island and idling the time away, when he discovers a sealed box of books featuring famous authors and reviews them. The work is a fantasy of reading without being disturbed and it serves as a useful guide to popular fiction of the early twentieth century.
The book is 8vo. and measures 7 7/8 x 5 3/8 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text. There are light bumps and rubbing on the crown and heel of the spine, small nicks on the paper label on the spine, and specks of wear at the tips, and in very good condition otherwise.
The last book is "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran and published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1932 [MCMXXXII]. The book is 3/4 bound, with five raised bands, six gilt-ruled compartments with the title and author's name in gilt on the spine, soft blue covers, marbled endpapers, a gift inscription signed in Chicago in 1933, a list of books by Gibran published by Knopf after the half-title page, a frontis portrait of the author, then the title page, the copyright page which says the book was originally published in 1923 and this is the twenty-eighth printing published in November 1932 - don't let that throw you off - the book is a very attractive copy that you don't find nowadays - the spine is a beautiful leather with raised bands and gilt lettering - then a Contents page and 107 pages of text, which are beautifully illustrated, the last leaf says the book was set up with the Original Old Style type, which is very attractive, and the top edge is gilt.
The book is 8vo. and measures 8 1/4 x 5 7/8 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages. The spine is bright, with a little rubbing along the edges, light rubbing at the tips, a couple of faint brown spots here and there, and two ribbon markers that are still crisp and look new, and a perfect gift copy for someone looking for this title that is much better than run of the mill.
