Thornton Utz (1914-1999) was an American illustrator, painter, cartographer, and portraitist born in Memphis, Tennessee, whose career helped define the polished, humorous Americana of mid-20th-century commercial illustration. After studying briefly at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, he became associated with the “Chicago Gang” of illustrators and gained national recognition for his advertising work and illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, producing dozens of covers during the 1940s and 1950s. Utz was particularly admired for lively depictions of suburban family life, transportation, and everyday American experiences, later turning increasingly to fine-art painting and portraiture. His sitters included President Jimmy Carter and members of the Carter family and Princess Grace of Monaco. He spent his later years in Sarasota, Florida, where he also operated a cartography business and continued painting until his death in 1999.
