Thomas Mercer Chronometers is a British firm established in 1858 that specializes in high-end, bespoke maritime timepieces. The company’s origins are rooted in the legacy of John Harrison, whose 18th Century “Sea Watch” revolutionized navigation by solving the problem of determining longitude at sea. Founder Thomas Mercer had apprenticed with his grandfather and a fortuitous encounter with a chronometer maker led him to open his own shop in London. The brand gained legendary status for its precision, notably providing the vital navigation instrument used by Sir Ernest Shackleton during his 1914 Antarctic rescue mission. By the 1980s the company had become the most prolific maker in history, accounting for approximately one-third of all mechanical marine chronometers ever produced. Following a period of dormancy, the brand was revived in 2012 and now designs luxury chronometers using precious materials for the modern yachting market.
