Thomas Robert Mann was born in 1947 in Northampton, Pennsylvania and grew up in Allentown, frequently spending time with his machinist father at Bethlehem Steel, which developed his early fondness for machinery and smithing. While in high school Mann experimented with jewelry-making and worked at a silversmith shop, selling enough to pay for his education at East Stroudsburg University, where he graduated with a degree in the performing arts in 1970. In 1977 Mann first began exhibiting jewelry at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and his success led him to establish his home and studio there in 1982. Today his metalsmithing and assemblage techniques combining industrial-style metals with found trinkets and baubles is world-renowned, a medium he dubbed “Techno-Romantic” that has made his Studio I/O an international success.
