Thomas Lorraine Hunt (1874-1938) was a Canadian-American painter associated with the transition from Impressionism to early modernism, best known for his vivid coastal and harbor scenes in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s. Born in London, Ontario, he was initially trained by his father, a landscape artist, but spent much of his early adulthood working in construction and real estate before fully committing to painting later in life. After relocating to California, he became an active member of the Laguna Beach art community and helped establish what is now the Laguna Art Museum, while developing a distinctive style characterized by bold color, simplified forms, and expressive light effects. His work—often depicting boats, docks, and shoreline environments—emphasized atmosphere and design over strict realism, placing him among the more experimental figures of the California plein air movement.
