A Map by Thomas Kitchin with a cartouche in the lower right that reads “A Map of New England, and Nova Scotia; and part of New York, Canada, and New Britain & the adjacent Islands of New Found Land Cape Breton &c By Tho. Kitchin Geogr.”, featuring the Gulf of St. Lawrence, The Atlantic Ocean, the fishing grounds off New Found Land, Fundy Bay, parts of New France, and numerous native tribe names in Canada, and one of the unique features of the map is the massive area labeled "County of York belonging to the Massachusetts Bay Company," much of which would become Maine later on. The map was published in London in 1758, so it is a French and Indian War era map of New England And Canada, and it shows the state of the northern British colonies at the outset of the war. Thomas Kitchin (1718 - 1784) was an engraver and cartographer from Southwark, England; a cartographer is a fancy word for a map-maker. He apprenticed under Emanuel Bowen from 1732 to 1739 and began working independently in 1741, and by 1755 he was well established in Holborn Hill, where his firm produced all kinds of engraved materials, including portraits and caricatures. Beginning in 1773, Kitchin was referred to as Hydrographer to the King, which meant he measured water depth and searched for shoals and rocks that could be hazards to navigation, and he collected information on water levels, currents and tides. Later he retired to St. Albans and continued making maps until the end of his life. He was known for his technical facility, clean lettering, and impressive etched decorations, and he produced several important works throughout his career, such as John Elphinstone’s map of Scotland in 1746 and the first pocket atlas of Scotland in 1748 - 1749, a large English Atlas from 1749 to 1760, which was the most important county atlas since the Elizabethan era and the first real attempt to cover the whole country at a large scale; he also produced the important John Mitchell map of North America in 1755, which was used at the peace treaties of Paris and Versailles, and a traveller’s guide to the roads of England and Wales towards the end of his life. Some of his maps were hand-colored, and this one is in black and white. The map measures 12 x 13 3/4 in. wide with two vertical folds, several creases along the margins and a half inch tear along the left fold at the bottom margin, and no discernible browning or spots on the front side.
