Thomas William Chantrell was born in Ardwick, Manchester, England on December 20th, 1916, and became a prolific British illustrator who was one of the most influential cinema poster artists of the 20th Century. After developing his skills in propaganda art during World War II, he built a career designing iconic posters for major studios like Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox. He was particularly celebrated for his work on Hammer Horror films and the Carry On comedy series, where he often used bold colors and pastiche styles. One of his most famous creations was the Raquel Welch poster for One Million Years B.C., which became a global cultural phenomenon. In 1977, he was commissioned to create the definitive “Style C” poster for the British release of Star Wars to provide more realistic likenesses of the lead actors. He died in a London hospital on July 15th, 2001 after suffering a heart attack, and his work is still highly influential, remembered for its high-energy compositions and its ability to distill the essence of epic, horror, and fantasy cinema into a single striking image.
