Theodor Von Deschwanden was a cousin of Paul Melchior Deschwanden (1811-1881) who had studied with Peter von Cornelius and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld in the 1830s and became a follower of the Catholic Nazarene artist Friedrich Overbeck.
