Theo Tobiasse (1927-2012) French, Jewish Abstract Signed Lithograph. Title: "The Great Parade." Depicts multiple figures, with one regal bearded man on horseback, passing along a street, all in vibrant scattered colors. Signed in pencil bottom right. Numbered XXXII/LXXV (32/75) in pencil bottom left, making this a much rarer edition of the original set of 175 using Arabic numerals first produced in 1965.

Overall Size: 30 x 23 1/2 in.

Sight Size: 26 x 20 in.

Théo Tobiasse was born Tobias Eidesas on April 26th, 1927 in Jaffa, Mandatory Palestine, to Jewish Lithuanian parents who settled in Paris in 1931. He showed early talent in drawing and painting, influenced by Raoul Dufy, but after his mother’s death in 1939 and the ensuing Nazi Occupation Tobiasse was barred from formal studies and took private courses in secret while in hiding during the Velodrome d’Hiver roundup. After the Liberation of Paris he worked in graphic design, creating tapestries, theater sets, and window displays for Hermès, and in 1950 he gained French nationality and moved to Nice, beginning to focus seriously on painting. His first group exhibition was in 1960 at the Salon des Peintres du Sud-Est, and after winning the Dorothy-Gould Prize in 1961 he dedicated himself fully to art, with his first solo exhibition in the United States in New York in 1968, quickly gaining international recognition. His early figurative works evolved into personal iconography inspired by his childhood, with Jewish themes becoming prominent after a 1970 visit to Jerusalem, and after settling in New York in 1984 his later works explored poetic texts and eroticized portrayals of women across pastels, graphite, ink, and mixed media inspired by his extensive travels until his death on November 3rd, 2012.
