Charles Dana Gibson (1867–1944) was an influential American illustrator and artist best known for creating the “Gibson Girl,” an idealized image of the fashionable, confident American woman of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Gibson began publishing illustrations in his teens and became a major contributor to Life magazine, where his elegant pen-and-ink drawings captured American social life, manners, romance, and humor. His work appeared in numerous books and magazines and helped shape popular ideas of beauty and femininity during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Later in his career, Gibson also painted portraits and landscapes, but he remains best remembered for the distinctive illustrations that made him one of America's most prominent commercial artists.
