This book is titled "The Book Of The All-Round Angler", written by John Bickerdyke and published by L. Upcott Gill in London, no date, but published around 1900. "John Bickerdyke" was the pseudonym of Charles Henry Cooke (1858-1933), and much like today's angler Jeremy Wade, star of the "River Monsters" television series. His angling travels provided a wealth of extraordinary tales: he searched high and low for a giant Irish pike and, though a true monster eluded him, he found enough fish and rumors to fill many books, and the book here is "A Comprehensive Treatise on Angling in Both Salt and Fresh Water", according to the title page, with over 220 engravings in the book. The cover is a green decorative cloth with gilt decorations and gilt lettering on the spine, a patterned border on the left side of the front cover showing game birds, animals and fish, and a gilt image of two anglers in a boat in the main panel. There are patterned endpapers, an engraved frontis of an English carp by White, the title page, the book was printed by A. Bradley at 170, Strand, in London. W.C., and there are eight pages of Contents (iii - x), a three-page Preface (xi - xiii), a three-page Introduction (xv - xvii), and the book is divided into four parts: Angling for Coarse Fish (128 pages), Angling for Pike (92 pages), Angling for Game Fish (127 pages), and Angling in Salt Water (108 pages), followed by a twenty-four page General Index, a thirteen page catalogue of Practical Handbooks published by Upcott Gill, and three pages of ads at the rear. The first edition was published in 1888 in a limited and numbered edition and the second edition was revised in 1900. The book here is 8vo. and measures 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 in. wide, with a tight binding and pretty clean pages and text, and the illustrations are clean as well. The spine is slightly faded, with bumps and two small tears along the crown, light rubbing at the heel and along the edge of the spine and at the tips, the front gutter is loose and has some wear, there are a couple of small dark spots on the blank endpapers after the front flyleaf, a bump on a corner tip and one tip turned in on the back cover, and still an interesting book about angling in the United Kingdom in the late 1800's and catching fresh and salt-water fish with rod and line. #134 #1593 Location Book Box 3
