Born Starling Burgess in Boston, Massachusetts in 1915, Tasha Tudor grew up to become one of America’s most beloved children’s book authors and illustrators. Over a career spanning seven decades, she wrote and illustrated more than 20 original titles, starting with “Pumpkin Moonshine” in 1938, and contributed delicate watercolor art to over 100 books, including classics like “The Secret Garden.” Her celebrated artistic achievements earned her two Caldecott Honor awards and the prestigious Regina Medal for Children’s Literature in 1971. Alongside her professional success, Tudor was famous for embracing a self-reliant 19th Century New England lifestyle, wearing Victorian-style attire, farming without modern conveniences, and weaving her surroundings into her art. She continued her creative work and simple living at her home in Marlboro, Vermont, until her death in 2008 at the age of 92.
