Scholars often refer to the Tang (618-907 AD) and Song (960-1279 AD) Dynasties as the “medieval” period of China, but the civilizations of those era were among the most advanced in the world at the time. Their writings, architecture, and artistry were foundational for many of the Asia nations that developed around them, heavily influenced by the spread of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Although glazing of earthenware had been discovered in the much earlier Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC), during the Three Kingdoms and Six Dynasties period (220-589 AD) the trend of unglazed firing of pottery returned. This combined with the style of the court robes the elderly figure is wearing indicates that this piece may be from the early days of Tang, although the unfired technique had some small resurgences in the following Song era.
